The 3xj Digital Website was carefully crafted
to maximize both design elements and functionality.
We wanted our site to not only look good, but to be able to serve
its content to various web users. For that reason we avoided using
large complicated animations done in Flash, however added Flash
elements on our site. One thing we wanted was the Flash animation
at the top of the site to keep going no matter if you switch pages.
For this reason we decided to use HTML Frames. This enables us
to change the main content area of the site with out reloading
the menus or the top Flash animation.
Using HTML Frames however adds complexity when users search your
website. For example, Google links to our content pages which
then load with out the menus and header. To prevent this, we have
added a small script to each page that checks to see if the menus
and header are loaded. If the menu and the header are not loaded
the script loads them automatically. Most web developers forget
about this issue when using Frames.
Another typical issue when using Flash for menus like our top
menu is a search engine is not able to index sub pages in their
search database. As well, for the few users that do not have the
capability of Flash they are not able to navigate a typical Flash
navigation site. Not at 3xj Digital though. For this specific
reason we also have a text based menu at the bottom of the site
so users with older browsers or mobile browsers. We specialize
in developing websites that not only function but look great too!
One more important search engine performance feature of the 3xj
Digital website is that the content of our site is in plain text
that can be indexed by search engines. Even most of our headers
are in plain text as opposed to images that cannot be indexed.
The 3xj Digital website is developed to look good on even the
smallest computer screens. Usually we develop websites to fit
a computer screen that has 800 pixels (dots) horizontally. The
majority of users use computer screens with 1024 pixels across
by 768 pixels down. The 3xj Digital website fits beautifully on
a screen 768 pixels vertically. Most top websites on the Internet
are designed to fit on a screen 800 pixels wide. For example,
MTV, CBC, CTV, MSN, Yahoo and NBC. Less often used due to the
design complexities, are websites that are designed to scale the
width according to the users screen. If you want a website that
scales to the width of the users screen there are a few options
that we can use to meet your needs and desires.
For the 3xj Digital contact page, we not only placed our contact
information on the page, we also put an email submission form
online. Email submission forms are handy for people who quickly
need to send you an email but only use web-based email that they
would need to log into first. As well, email forms can have some
intelligence to direct the email to various people depending on
what options are selected. Using email forms protects your email
address from being picked up by spam programs that search the
Internet for email addresses. Another option for protecting your
email addresses is to place them as graphics or Flash documents,
as spam programs typically cannot find these types. 3xj Digital
chose to publish its main email address with out any protection.
Within 3 weeks it was receiving a flood of spam messages after
a year with no spam whatsoever. With spam filtering technology
like the 3xj Digital’s spam filter, you may choose as 3xj
Digital did to simply post your email addresses with no protection.
The 3xj Digital website uses a page to warn people when they
click on links that take them away from the 3xj Digital website.
Often a feature like this can be used to place a legal disclaimer
that you are not responsible for the content on third party websites.
The last element we want to cover is our main page. On our main
page we wanted to make sure that users could not only get I nice
introduction to our company, but also to display information that
updates (our news), and display the very important contact information.
With most websites, the homepage turns into useless title page,
however website homepages can be so much more. They can be used
to hook your viewers into exploring your website more deep.
